In Binding Theory, bind refers to a relation that may obtain between two (NP-)nodes.

Comments

In Chomsky (1981), a node a is said to bind a node i iff a and i have the same referential index (see coindexing), and a c-commands i.

Furthermore, if a binds i then, if a is in an A-position, a A-binds i and if a is in an A-bar position, a A-bar-binds i.

These notions are crucially involved in the definition of the conditions of the Binding Theory.
