If present trends continue, and no major disasters happen, then it is quite possible that in a few centuries all humans will potentially be in social contact with all others, so that the motivation for different languages disappears. This would mean that there would be no more need for the first sense of the term "language" (in nonhistorical contexts), because having language in the second sense would mean using the only language that exists.
