Speech sound

In phonetics, a speech sound is a unit of speech that may or may not directly correspond to a phoneme. Speech sounds that are not phonemes may occur in speech disorders, in infant babble during the period of initial language acquisition, or as non-distinctive, sub-segmental features of phonemes.
