Il termine ombrello "dipendenze a distanza" (unbounded distance constructions, long-distance dependencies) è spesso usato in letteratura per racchiudere i seguenti fenomeni:

   * wh-questions: Which book did Mary buy ___i ? John asked [which book]i Mary bought ___i?
   * frasi relative: Mary read the book thati John had lent ___i her
   * topicalizzazioni: [Someone like Mary]i, I wouldn't ask ___i anything.
   * scissioni: It was John whoi Mary asked __i something
   * estraposizioni: John saw Mary in the park, climbing on a big tree - Gianni ha visto Maria nel parco, arrampicata a un grosso albero

Notare che fenomeni di questo tipo sono un problema nell'analisi sintattica delle lingue a ordine fisso, in cui si deve tener conto di cambiamenti nell'ordine dei costituenti. Infatti, come si può notare negli esempi, tutti i fenomeni elencati comportano che un costituente non sia più in situ. Un formalismo che descriva questi fenomeni deve quindi rendere conto di alcune cose:

  1. lo spostamento del costituente;
  2. la relazione di dipendenza tra il costituente non in situ e il suo posizionamento "non marcato";
  3. il fatto che queste relazioni non abbiano restrizioni sulla distanza tra il costituente non in situ e il suo posizionamento "non marcato" (se non ovvie restrizioni legate a risorse fisiche della memoria del parlante).
