Definizione

Il termine generico "dipendenze a distanza" (unbounded distance constructions, long-distance dependencies) è spesso usato in letteratura per racchiudere i seguenti fenomeni:

  • wh-questions:
    • [Which book]i did Mary buy __i yesterday?
    • John asked [which book]i Mary bought __i yesterday.
  • frasi relative:
    • Mary read the book thati John had lent __i her
  • topicalizzazioni:
    • [Someone like Mary]i, I wouldn't ask ___i anything.
  • scissioni:
    • È stato Andreai, che Biagio ha rimproverato __i.
    • It was John whoi Mary asked __i something

  1. lo spostamento del costituente;
  2. la relazione di dipendenza tra il costituente non in situ e il suo posizionamento "non marcato";

    • Maryi is tough to fooli.

    • [Chi]i __i deve ancora arrivare?
    • [Who]i __i is still to come?
    • [For how many years]i, had Mary thought that John had loved her __i, before she found out that he was cheating on her?
  • riempimenti parassitari:
    • [Which president]i did articles about __i call __i a racist? (ma: * Whoi were articles about __i very revealing?)
